Mozambique: Rising crime - PRM resumes interaction with the community
Tropical Cyclone Idai, category 4 (on a scale of 5) continues to batter the centre of Mozambique. The heavy rains that have been falling since Thursday (14) have left the city of Beira flooded, with infrastructure damaged by the continuing strong winds. There is no electricity, and telephone and internet communications are cut off. So far, there is no official record of deaths.
An update from the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) on Friday morning (15) indicates that Idai is weakening, “but is now a Category 3 tropical cyclone with winds of 140 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 160 kilometres per hour. It is expected that, by 2:00 p.m., wind speeds will fall to 70 kilometres per hour as the storm maintains its course towards Manica”.
According to INAM, the cyclone is already influencing the weather in the provinces of Zambézia (districts of Chinde, Luabo, Inhassuge and Mopeia), Sofala (all districts), Manica (all districts), Tete (districts of Changara, Mutarara, Doha, Marara, Cahora Bassa, Moatize, Chiuta and Tete City) and Inhambane (districts of Govuro, Inhassoro, Vilankulo and Massinga) with very strong winds (140 to 160 kilometres per hour), accompanied by very heavy rains (more than 150 mm in 24 hours) and severe thunderstorms.
In the city of Beira, Cyclone Idai is causing flooding in the neighbourhoods of Manga, Ndunda, Manga Mascarrenha, Vaz, Munhava, Macurrungo, Chipangara, Chaimite (Praia Nova), Maraza, Pioneers, Matacuane, Mananga, Chota, Muhava, Matador, Vila Massane, Maganza, Inhamizua, Chingussura, Nhaconjo, Pontagea and Macuti, The destruction of public housing and infrastructure caused by the strong winds is visible.
There is no electricity, and telecommunication connections with the centre of Mozambique are limited.
Authorities have not at this time reported any deaths directly attributable to Cyclone Idai.
