The effects of cyclone Idai are already impacting the city of Beira. The weather in this city is being characterised by rains and strong winds from 9 a.m. today.
The weather forecast indicates that cyclone Idai will hit the city at around 7 p.m. today with winds above 180 kilometres per hour but the effects would begin to feel more intense starting at 2 p.m..
At the moment the cyclone is about 100 kilometres from the city of Beira.
The municipality continues to monitor the movement of the cyclone. Beira mayor Daviz Simango again urged the population living near the coast to be on alert.
The cyclone is expected to set landfall in Beira at a time when the tide is low.
Throughout the morning the coastal police were monitoring the movement along the coast where some people – though aware of the danger – sought to collect the sand that was swept by the wind.
