Mozambique’s National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) announced Monday that the government has a deficit of 13.7 million US dollars to assist victims of natural disasters, including food insecurity.
Out of the 814,000 people affected by food insecurity, only 378,000 have already benefited from assistance, and the money is needed to cover the rest of the population for the coming three months, said Augusta Maita, General Director of INGC when speaking to partners during a meeting on humanitarian assistance in Maputo.
“We have a serious deficit which means thousands of people are still in need of assistance. This is a situation that concerns us a lot. We are referring to people from the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala and Cabo Delgado,” said Maita.
The director revealed that heavy rainfall weather has claimed 50 lives nationwide since the rainy season began in last October, while his institute is battling against the prolonged droughts that have affected more than 45,000 food producers and an area of more than 80,243 hectares of different crops.
Provinces of Gaza and Maputo were among the most severely affected areas.
