At least 280 male and female malefactors, both national and foreign, operating in parts of the province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, have been neutralised by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
Speaking in parliament, in the Assembly of the Republic during a government briefing, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário said on Wednesday that this operational result was a corollary of close collaboration and denunciations by local residents.
The malefactors are awaiting trial in the judicial courts of Cabo Delgado, the AIM report reads.
Small groups of malefactors resort to acts of intimidation and commit barbaric murders with firearms and machetes, set fire to homes, loot food from the population and attack civilian vehicles.

“Nothing justifies this kind of heinous crime, which we strongly condemn,” the prime minister said.
“To deal with the actions carried out by the malefactors, units and services of the FDS were deployed to those points with the objective of defending the population and public and private economic and social enterprises,” the prime minister detailed.
As to the involvement of foreign citizens in criminal actions, Mozambican authorities were exchanging information with neighbouring countries, “which is allowing the neutralisation and limitation of the malefactors’ movements,” he added.
