Mozambique: Peace process is slow, but with great development – President

Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Tuesday said in Maputo that the peace process with the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, “is slow”, despite registering “great” development.

“Although slow, with a very great development trend, the process is continuing and moving,” President Nyusi told journalists on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting.

According to the head of state, experts are currently discussing the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of the residual Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) fighters. “Progress is good, work is going smoothly, there will be no shortage of difficulties,” Nyusi said,

President Nyusi also clarified a controversy created by statements made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation José Pacheco on Monday to the effect that the government had already integrated 400 Renamo officials into the armed forces, statements which were denied by the party the following day.

‘Recently, a major [Defence and Security Forces] course finished in Maputo with more than 2,000 people graduating, and there were more than 400 young people, who are not from Renamo, but were demobilised,” the president explained.

On Tuesday, Renamo accused Pacheco of a “blatant lie” regarding the integration of [Renamo] party officials.

The main opposition party now expects the Mozambican government to proceed with the integration of Renamo officials into the Mozambican State Security and Information Services (SISE) intelligence services.
