Flooding forced many families to spend the night beside the Quelimane-Nicoadala stretch the EN10 [national road number 10] a situation which offers little comfort, especially to the children among those subjected to rain, cold and hunger.
And because there is no alternative, the authorities decided to move forward with compulsory evacuation in response to the danger.
Permanent Secretary of Zambezia Province Júlio Mendes says that 40,000 families are currently affected.
“We ask that the populations stay in safe places and that families offer support in terms of accommodation,” Mendes said.
Reports indicate that 80 government buildings, particularly health and education establishments, have been damaged, and that 80 unclassified roads connecting districts and localities are impassable.
