Mozambique police seeks Angola’s experience in protecting oil facilities

Mozambique Police could benefit from Angola’s experience in protecting oil facilities to secure the sector’s projects in the country, the commander-in-chief of the corporation Bernardino Rafael has said.

“The fundamental objective of our visit to Angola was to obtain the maximum experience of guaranteeing security and public order in places where companies exploiting natural resources are located,” Mozambique’s largest daily newspaper ‘O País’ quotes Rafael as saying.

The Mozambican authorities are committed to ensuring the security of natural gas projects in the Rovuma Basin in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

“In the present case, we are talking about Rovuma gas, in Cabo Delgado province. We were interested in how the Angolan police control their resources and how to capitalise on this experience,”he said.

The police commander-in-chief pointed to the need for an integrated system to protect natural resource exploitation zones, in order to contain potential threats.

On February 21, vehicles of companies contracted by the American oil company Anadarko were the target of armed attacks by unidentified insurgents in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to a further six.

The attacks occurred on a road 20 kilometres from Afungi, in the district of Palma, Cabo Delgado, where Anadarko is building a liquefied natural gas processing plant and an aerodrome.

Dozens of people, including civilians, members of the Defence and Security Forces and alleged insurgents, have already died in the violence in northern Cabo Delgado, which has forced the residents of many villages to relocate to safer areas.
