Government winds up Maputo Sul following completion of bridge and roads

The Mozambican government announced yesterday that the Maputo Sul company had been wound up after the completion of the works it was formed to undertake, namely the Maputo-Katembe bridge over the capital’s bay and associated roads.

“With these projects coming to an end, we thought it was time to wind up the company,” said João Machatine, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting.

The challenge now was “to maintain these infrastructures”, the minister added, a responsibility which will be delegated to the National Road Administration (ANE) and the Roads Fund.

Maputo Sul has 107 employees, who will be absorbed into tolling operations on the new access roads, while others will return to the institutions they came from.

In October, the Mozambican government announced that it would concession the Maputo Ring Road and the Maputo-Katembe Bridge under the public-private partnerships law.
