A sharp deterioration in the state of the Grande Hotel in the city of Beira in Sofala is putting the lives of the building’s approximately 4,000 people residents at risk.
Some parts of the building are collapsing, and a genuine tragedy may occur at any moment.
This year, three people died when a plaque fell on them. Residents know the danger they are exposed to, but claim they have nowhere else to go.
In addition to the general decay, the building has problems with waste and illumination.
“We have already asked the city council, we have already five times done the survey of how many families are here. We even recognised our documents with the notary, but so far we have no answers. Kids are playing and falling just like that. This is a very serious situation for us … .. We are living poorly here. We have no place to go,” some of the building’s residents say.
Albano Cariche, the councillor for construction in the Municipal Council of Beira, says that the city does have a project to transfer the Grande Hotel residents, but lacked the financial resources to put it into effect.
