Movie: Becoming Astrid
As ever there's a steady flow of great Nordic films being released, but obviously we at the Scandinavian Film Club (Av. Armando Tivane 821) can only show a tiny fraction of them. The selection this time will surely wet the appetite of a larger audience, and not only the most ardent film freaks.
Becoming Astrid (2018) depicts the early life of Sweden's beloved writer Astrid Lindgren whose books most of us grew up with (Pippi Longstocking, Emil, Madicken, Ronja, The Brothers Lionheart, Karlsson-on-the-roof, just to mention a few of her characters). In the film young Astrid comes forth as a true punk: a mischievous, anti-authoritarian spirit with disdain for conventions and religious dogma, who got involved in extra-marital affairs - all quite shocking for the time. The film offers an explanation of the events of her childhood and adolescence that determined her career path, which up-to-now has been little talked about. It also caused quite a controversy as Astrid's family criticized the film-makers for dragging up intimate details that should better be buried in the past. Of course, this only increased its popularity...
Showtime is 20h00 on Tuesday 26th of February, but feel free to arrive a little earlier to mingle and stock up on beverages, Swedish sweets and popcorn. Entrance is free as always. As the film is a little over two hours we cannot wait for latecomers.
