Mozambique needs to raise 8 another billion meticais (€113 million) out of 14.6 billion meticals (€207 million) needed to hold its general elections later this year, the spokesperson for the National Elections Commission, Paulo Cuinica, said on Thursday.
Cuinica said at a press conference in the capital Maputo that most of the expenses should be covered in this first phase, including the production of materials, the supply of equipment and the training of agents that will conduct the census.
The Mozambican government has 6.5 billion meticais (€92 million) equivalent to 44% of the 14.6 billion meticals it needs to carry out its sixth general elections.
Cuinica also said it was a crucial phase in financial terms, saying the government had upped efforts to gain support from international partners to garner the money it is lacking.
The National Elections Commission is also concerned with heavy rain in the centre of the country and the displacement of people in Cabo Delgado province, where armed groups have been carrying out attacks since October 2017, killing at least 140 people.
Mozambique’s general elections are scheduled for 15 October and will be the first of a new electoral model resulting from peace negotiations between the government and the main opposition party Renamo.
