The partnership between Mozambique’s publicly owned National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) and the French engineering and construction company Technip will not only add value to the country’s gas projects but will also ensure the sustainability of the growing sector, according to ENH chairperson Omar Mitha.
Mitha was speaking at the inauguration of the facilities in Maputo of ENH Logistics which is partnering with Technip to develop the natural gas projects in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. He explained that the joint venture between ENH Logistics and Technip will provide services for the hydrocarbon industry including the manufacture and maintenance of offshore equipment and the provision of spare parts.
He added that “the establishment of this type of partnership is important because the country will become a major oil and gas provider as a result of the projects in Area One and Area Four [in the Rovuma Basin]”. In particular, he stressed that the partnership will result in the transfer of technology, the training of technical staff, and sustainable development. Thus, Technip is already training Mozambicans in Brazil, Britain, and Indonesia in preparation for their integration into the gas projects in Mozambique.
In 2017 Technip together with its partners JGC Corporation and Samsung Heavy Industries were awarded the contract for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, Commissioning and Start-up (EPCIC) of the Coral South FLNG facility. According to Technip’s country manager, Nicolas Sicard, work on the EPCIC is being carried out in accordance with the timetable.
The floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility will produce 3.4 million tonnes per annum of liquefied natural gas and will be moored in 2,000 meters of water depth in Area Four. It is due to begin production in 2022. The operator in Area Four is the Italian company ENI and its partners are American oil and gas giant ExxonMobil, the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Kogas of Korea, GALP of Portugal, and Mozambique’s ENH.
