At least 26 inmates have been transferred to Maputo Maximum Security Prison [BO] in the course of an investigation into the January death of a detainee in the capital’s Provincial Penitentiary, the institution announced today.
The investigation is being conducted by a commission of inquiry created by the National Penitentiary Service (Sernap) in conjunction with teams from the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), the director of the prison, Ramos Zambuco, quoted by the newspaper Noticias today, said.
The evidence suggests that the murder, committed with knives, was prepared by a group of inmates a day in advance, for reasons yet to be determined, he says.
Official figures indicate that Mozambican goals are overcrowded by a factor of 222.1%, with no slowdown in prospect. In December 2017, the Attorney General’s annual report indicated that the country’s goals were housing 18,185 inmates, but had a maximum capacity of only 8,200.
