It was precisely at 5:00 p.m. (local time – 3:00 p.m. in Mozambique) when the Mozambican head of state landed at Mauritius airport with his wife, Isaura Nyusi, at the start of a four-day state visit.
The Prime Minister of Mauritius and other state officials were already stationed at the airport for the reception of the Mozambican statesman. And so with fitting escort, Filipe Nyusi headed for a meeting with the Mozambican delegation.
But the Head of State also held another meeting – with the business representatives accompanying him, where he demanded greater aggressiveness from his fellow-Mozambicans in search of opportunities.
“The call is always to be aggressive, in the sense of selling Mozambique in business terms more. Let’s talk about establishing a more frequent communicability, because that is what will enable an increase trade. A lot of what Mauritius needs can be produced in Mozambique,” Filipe Nyusi said.
Speaking to the press, CTA chairman Agostinho Vuma said that Mozambican businesspeople wanted to increase cotton exports to Mauritius and hoped that the visit would produce financing for increased cotton production in Mozambique.
“We have been exporting cotton and at a rate of about 17 percent. Also, it was decided during a conference last September that Mozambique could be important in terms of clean energy production, boosting the thermal power station capacity of the five islands in this area of Mauritius,” Vuma said.
Foreign Minister José Pacheco spoke about Mozambique’s main interests in Mauritius, pointing to tourism, environmental protection and agriculture. Mauritius, it should be noted, has great potential in tourism and agriculture. Mozambique should seek to benefit from its experience in the training of Mozambicans in these areas, as well as in environmental protection.
“Mozambique is interested in exploring the experience of Mauritius in the field of governance in the context of economic development, and tourism in Mauritius is an international reference point. There is an opportunity here to profit from a tourism school that is very close to us,” Minister Pacheco said.
But Mauritius is also interested in Mozambique’s hydrocarbons for the production of energy, Minister Pacheco added.
On the second day of his visit, Filipe Nyusi has meetings scheduled with the interim president of Mauritius and its prime minister, as well as the signing of memoranda and visits to various institutions.
