Maputo port throughput grew 7% in 2018, breaks cargo record – Mozambique

The port of Maputo, Mozambique’a main maritime interface, saw a record volume of 19.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2018, a 7% increase compared to the previous year, the concessionaire announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The volume was significantly higher than the last record in 2014 with 19.3 million tonnes of cargo.

The results were partly due to the dredging of the bay of Maputo, completed in 2017, the statement from the Maputo Port Development Society explained.

On the other hand, rail freight processing has grown again due to a joint strategy between the port, the Mozambique Ports and Railways and the South African company Transnet, it said.

This year, the port expects to increase cargo processing capacity to 26.5 million tonnes, after completing rehabilitation work on a part of the pier.
