The Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique, Bryan Hunt, said on Friday that American business people wanted security guarantees to invest in the country.
Hunt, who was speaking at the launch of the 12th Annual US-Africa Business Summit said investors needed guarantees that there was a national effort to deal with and to undermine violent extremist ideology in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
He was referring to a recent wave of armed attacks in the region by unknown groups.
The armed attacks in northern Mozambique broke out again in November. Since October 2017 at least 140 people have died, including residents, alleged attackers and members of security forces.
The wave of violence in Cabo Delgado – 2,000 kilometres north of Maputo, in the north of Mozambique, bordering Tanzania – erupted after an armed attack on police stations in Mocímboa da Praia by a group originating at a local mosque that was preaching insurgency against the state and whose approach to Islam have created tensions with locals for two years.
