In the last decade, the Mozambican government has channelled the equivalent of about EUR 105 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to agriculture and rural development projects, the financial institution announced today.
The actions “benefited 240,000 people and resulted in increased production, enriched land and new economic opportunities”, the AfDB statement declares.
The AfDB points to the Sustainable Land and Water Resources Management Project in the Massangena district of southern Gaza province as an example.
“The project focuses on building hydraulic infrastructures to regulate water runoff and control floods,” solving a supply crisis and allowing farmers to diversify their crops.
“There are new crops, like rice, once unthinkable in semi-arid areas,” the AfDB concludes.
For this and next year, the AfDB estimates an expansion of Mozambique’s GDP by between 3.5 per cent and 5 per cent, “driven by agriculture, which continues to recover from the 2015-2016 drought, and by the extractive industries, with exports of coal continuing to expand”.
