Three men were on Monday lynched by a mob in Chókwè, southern Mozambique, after being accused of robbing homes, said the city’s police commander Anibal Jamal.
One was seriously injured by the mob, having escaped death due to police intervention, added Jamal in statements to the Mozambican television channel TVM.
The incident occurred in 1º de Maio neighbourhood of Chókwè, Gaza province.
The residents attacked the three men during an informal patrol following the wave of robberies in homes.
Two people were arrested on suspicion of inciting the others to attack the three men, the Chókwé police commander added.
The detention led the residents to mutiny, for a few hours.
The so-called “justice by own hands” is common in Mozambique and usually motivated by complaints from residents that the authorities are inoperative in fighting crime.
