The number of Malaria deaths in Mozambique were 111 fewer in 2018 than in the previous year, down from 851 deaths to 740, the deputy national director of Public Health has said.
Maria Benigna Matsinhe said the number of malaria cases diagnosed also dropped in 2018, reaching 7.1 million against 9.98 million in 2017.
The provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula in the north and Zambezia in central Mozambique were the most affected by the disease.
Matsinhe pointed out that the fight against malaria in 2018 was based on parasite density.
Under the new approach, anyone with 100,000 parasites in the blood is considered to be seriously ill and must be hospitalized while those whose parasite content is below that amount are treated as outpatients.
