Following the formal conclusion of the municipal elections cycle on December 21, the Embassy of the United States of America reiterates its call on all stakeholders to apply the lessons learned, including those cited by relevant electoral authorities, in order to address the problems that were observed in a number of municipalities. A thorough review of electoral rules and procedures surrounding vote tabulation, dispute resolution and candidate eligibility should lead to the development and implementation of reforms that increase the transparency and legitimacy of these key processes. Taking these steps and ensuring that all participants in Mozambique’s democratic process, including voters, election and security officials and party representatives, are given sufficient time and opportunity to understand their associated rights and responsibilities, will be essential to make certain that the results of the October 2019 national elections reflect the will of the people and contribute to the sustainable peace that all Mozambicans desire.
