The authorities in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province are going to install a floating metal structure across the River Muera to replace a bridge that collapsed on Monday, Rádio Moçambique announced on Thursday.
The bridge connected the provincial capital to Muidumbe, Mocímboa da Praia and Palma districts.
The bridge collapsed when a truck loaded with containers of timber, weighing more than 40 tonnes was trying to cross it.
The truck belonged to a Chinese company called Mongo and it is still stuck in the ruins.
Nobody was injured but the journey between Pemba and Palma now takes another six hours along a road that goes around the river.
The governor of Cabo Delgado province told reporters that the company did not obey the traffic rules and will be held liable for all the damage it caused.
