Alexandre Chivale, the lawyer of Mozambique’s former president, Armando Guebuza, told Lusa on Thursday that he had no knowledge of any arrest warrant issued against his client for fraud and money laundering.
Chivale said he could not speculate regarding the possibility of there having been an arrest warrant issued against the former president, as has been claimed on Mozambican social networking sites.
Lusa contacted the United States Department of Justice asking for more information regarding whether an arrest warrant had been issued against the former president but has not received any response so far.
Asked whether the detention of the former minister of finance Manuel Chang in South Africa this week could be the first of many or whether it was an isolated case, Chivale said he did not know the terms of the detention and therefore could not answer that question.
Chang was detained in South Africa on 29 December when he was trying to embark for Dubai following an extradition request issued by the American authorities.
