Authorities in Mozambique have arrested 13 Mozambicans and seven Chinese for possessing moonshine wood, whose exploitation is banned.
The 20 were detained on site on Thursday by authorities in Gorongosa National Park (PNG), central Mozambique.
Domingos Cuiínda, head of the Sofala Provincial Forest and Wildlife Services Inspectorate, said the group intended to transport the wood in six trucks.
“One of those in charge of the Chinese-owned group tried to bribe the prosecutors,” Cuiínda added.
The lawsuit has already been referred to the Gorongosa District Attorney’s Office to proceed with its criminal proceedings.
National and international studies indicate that several species of wood are at risk of disappearing in Mozambique due to unbridled cutting.
