President Filipe Nyusi has today told parliament that Renamo’s appointment of cadres to leadership positions in the SDS will be completed when the party takes steps in line with the agreement made.
President Nyusi, however, did not specify what kind of initiatives should be followed.
Interim leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Ossufo Momade, on Tuesday accused the government of violating the Memorandum of Understanding on the peace process for appointing three officers of the armed wing of the party on an interim basis against 14 stipulated in the agreement.
“The process should be completed as soon as Renamo completes the subsequent steps, which are under its responsibility, according to the memorandum made public for the monitoring of all Mozambicans,” President Nyusi said.
Speaking in no uncertain terms, the Mozambican Head of State debased Renamo’s objection to the interim nature of the appointments so far, noting that the designated military is performing the new duties normally.
“The military are there and they know that when they are given a mission, they comply,” he said.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Head of State and the interim leader of Renamo provides for the armed wing to be demobilized and its members integrated into civilian life, in addition to the appointment of 14 officers from the main opposition party to senior positions in the Defense and Security Forces (FDS).
The Memorandum of Understanding is part of an ongoing peace process aimed at ending cycles of military violence by opposing the FDS and the armed wing of the opposition.
