City Council partners with Sprint for new bus stops in Maputo

The city of Maputo has just inaugurated its first 10 new bus stops out of a total of 75, which now allow citizens to wait for public transport in a much safer and more comfortable way. The new bus stops are the result of a partnership between the Maputo Municipal Council and Sprint, an advertising and transportation company.

By the end of March 2019, the Mozambican capital will benefit from bus stops in a total of 25 locations distributed throughout the city, rising to 75 new stops by the second half of 2020.

This represents an investment of US$300,000 and is expected to improve the quality of life of thousands of users who are daily dependent on public transport, but subject to sun, rain and wind.

According to Maputo mayor David Simango, “this is an important project for the city and for the citizens. We all gain from these new stops”.

Miguel Parreira do Amaral, general manager of Sprint, said: “We are very pleased with this partnership with the Municipality of Maputo and in bringing another solution which joins innovation and service to the public. The new stops will improve the city’s infrastructure and bring greater comfort and security to all citizens. I also want to point out that we have as our first partner, Cervejas de Moçambique – CDM, which has supported this project from the beginning.”

“We hope to expand this solution to other cities in the country,” says Miguel Parreira do Amaral.

Busstops

The public service project has numerous advantages, both for the municipality and residents. The new stops will facilitate access to both ‘machibombos’ [buses] and ‘chapas’ [mini-vans] and increase the safety of users, especially as they have night-time illumination and use solar panels to reduce energy consumption.

The new stops are equipped to provide various types of information useful not only to bus passengers but also to motorists moving around the city.

As predetermined places for people to catch the various types of public transport they should help clarify circulation routes and make the urban public transport network more efficient while enhancing the city’s pavements.

Sprint plans to increase Sprint Network to 75 locations within the city, at a total investment of around one million dollars. Source Capital, a private equity fund operating in Mozambique, is one of the investors in this Sprint project.
