Minister of Labour Vitoria Diogo says that General Labour Inspectorate (IGT) should join with justice authorities in dealing with labour offences, in order to better discipline employers in the country, O País reports.
The Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister, Vitória Diogo, said that, while the labour courts were not in operation, the General Labour Inspectorate should continue to cooperate with the courts “so that the cases sent can be tried” more quickly.
Vitória Diogo was speaking at the opening of the Third IGT Consultative Council, where she also revealed that, since 2015, the inspectorate had already accomplished 89.6% of its five-year goal years, with a total of 34,039 establishments inspected, covering 668,000 workers, and detecting 48,960 infringements, of which 38,115 (78%) were the subject to a warning and 10,845 (22%) to fines.
Among the offences detected, lack of compliance with health, hygiene and safety rules at work, failure to channel social security contributions and the illegal hiring of foreign labour predominated.
This information was shared on the day the inspectorate launched its new inspector’s uniform and the first guideline for labour inspection in the construction and mining sectors.
Diogo demanded that inspectors be properly familiar with this and other inspection activity guidelines.
“A labour inspector must demonstrate a general and specific knowledge of the labour domain, act with fairness, and be able to make thoughtful decisions. Only by being professionally sound can you exercise authority as an inspector,” she said.
The minister also demanded that the inspectorate’s guiding principles be available on the IGT’s website, ensuring that companies had knowledge of these documents so as to be able to act within the law.
