Nine people have died of suspected food poisoning after a family gathering in the interior of Mozambique, Tete provincial hospital said on Monday.
All the victims “had eaten corn flour with beans,” Lídia Cunha, the hospital’s clinical director told reporters.
Three people died in Chiúta, while six others managed to go to the hospital in Tete but did not survive.
Two other people remain hospitalised in serious condition, while another eight who participated in the gathering, and did not show any signs of poisoning, were observed at a health centre in Chiúta and were discharged, she said.
Samples of the ingested food will be analysed in the laboratory to ascertain the cause of death, Cunha said.
