‘Women Here and Now’ at the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre in Maputo
UEM hosts first opera show in Mozambique titled “Mwango and Mwanga”
The Eduardo Mondlane University presents the Mwango Mwanga opera, inspired by Bastien und Bastienne, one of the first works by the great Austrian composer of classical music of the 18th century Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Written in 1768, the plot tells the story of Bastienne, a young peasant girl, who believes she is being betrayed by her beloved, Bastien, with a noble lady. She seeks help from the wizard Colas and asks him to use his magical powers to bring Bastien's love back. The plot develops on the "advice" of Colas to the two lovers, who after much confusion, reach a happy ending. Written in German, the opera is a satire on the "pastoral" genre of the time.
In the Mozambican version, Mwango and Mwanga, the same as Meu and Minha in the Maconde language, take place in a village in Cabo Delgado.
By treating love in a comic and naive way, Bastien und Bastienne is suitable for all audiences, both children and adults.
