Mozambican idol Fany Mpfumo: Words & Music Songbook

Khuzula Editions is launching the first-ever Mozambican songbook at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre in Maputo today at 6 p.m..

The songbook contains works from the extensive catalogue of one of the biggest stars of Mozambican popular music: Fany Mpfumo, the King of Marrabenta, and was produced by the group TP50 in partnership with Musicarquivo Department of the School of Communication and Arts of the Eduardo Mondlane University.

The volume falls within the ‘Tempo dos Tocadores’ [‘Time of Players’] collection, which aims not only to catalogue the lyrics and music of Mozambican song, but also to encourage professional and amateur musicians and students to play Mozambican music.

As a bilingual book (in Portuguese and English), it is hoped it will enable audiences abroad to sample Mpfumo’s work, too.

Fany Mpfumo, one of the great names in Mozambican music, was chosen to launch the collection on account of his importance and centrality, he being the best-known, best-loved and most revered singer in Mozambique’s musical history.

Leafing through the songbook soon demonstrates that Mpfumo’s lyrics and melodies are as beautiful as they are simple.

The book has a foreword by Samuel Matusse, author of the book “Fany Mpfumo and Other Icons”. Matusse believes that, in launching the songbook, TP50, Musicaquivo and Khuzula, are honouring a man who, if Mozambicans were polytheistic, would be “the Mozambican God of Music”.

Matusse says that Fany Mpfumo is like those important discoveries of science which sometimes arise by the mere chance. That is how he became a legend, a true star whose brilliance made him one of the most glittering idols in our popular songbook.
