‘Informal market’ rising in the shadow of the new Mapto-Katembe bridge – Watch

An informal “Dumba-Nengue” market emerging near one of the Ka-Tembe Maputo bridge on-ramps is endangering the safety of dozens of people.

This is what the crowded new access road looks like. Dozens of people, mostly women, have come together to practice commerce, but this is not without its risks.

In an effort to protect lives, the Traffic Police have begun an awareness campaign, while, faced with resistance, the Municipal Police took more direct action, which was characterised as “badly received” by the vendors.

The woman cited in the report below says she lost her stock of goods for sale during police operations, but the Traffic Police have vowed to continue their safety campaigning among the vendors.
