The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged 10 members of Mozambique’s armed forces with corruption in an amount exceeding four million meticais (58,000 Euros), it was reported today.
According to Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias, the defendants hold senior positions at the Lieutenant General Armando Guebuza Superior Institute of Defence (ISED), and wrongly allocated scholarships and tickets for domestic and international flights to relatives.
As well as improperly paying for fuel, the individuals are also accused of seizing vehicles from the institution, the newspaper said.
The accusations, drawn up by the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption (GCCC), are based on an audit carried out by the Inspectorate of the Ministry of National Defence, which uncovered offences committed between 2013 and 2015.
The ten individuals have been granted bail pending trial.
