Mukhedzisseli (Mozambique)
Duration: 25 minutes
Since 2004 Ocean Revolution has been working to address inequity and social injustice in ocean management by studying the socio-economic implications of environmental changes, development and conservation burdens on indigenous and marginalised communities.
For centuries, even millennia, environmental law and stewardship in indigenous societies came from the stars, land and water. Practical wisdom, cultural and spiritual rules were passed from generation to generation to set the relationship between human beings and non-human beings.
War, development, governments, and natural events occasionally put those practices on pause, but, there are always “watchers” seeking to harmonize contemporary narratives with ancient ocean rules. In Mozambique we call the watchers "Mukhedzisseli."
This film is the story of the watchers of Inhambane Bay in Southern Mozambique and the resources they marshalled to return "ocean rules" to their home.
