Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Friday that the country is going through a crucial and sensitive moment in its attempts to reach effective, sustainable and lasting peace.
Speaking at a ceremony closing a training course for sergeants of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) in the town of Boane, about 30 kilometres west of Maputo, Nyusi said the delicate situation imposes added responsibilities on the FADM.
The government and the former rebel movement Renamo, with the participation of international observers, have embarked upon the disarming and demobilisation of the Renamo militia and the reintegration of its members into the defence and security forces, or back into civilian society. This, Nyusi said, poses challenges to the FADM and its structure.
“Peace is an inalienable value of Mozambicans, despite the existence of people who make peace conditional on other preconceived processes”, he continued. “It is up to the FADM to maintain internal cohesion, and to comply scrupulously with its regulations and states”.
He expected members of the FADM to display professionalism and respect for the Mozambican Constitution.
The FADM, Nyusi continued, was required to defend the gains made by the Mozambican people, and to preserve their values against any threats.
Sergeants are regarded as the backbone of the armed forces, since they are the intermediate category between officers and privates. Nyusi sad they guarantee permanent and professional communication between the operational and strategic levels of the military, allowing the National Defence Policy to be expressed in practical and concrete terms.
Training has been and will always be a priority for the FADM, stressed the President. Without it, it might be difficult for the State to survive in a competitive world full of threats. “Hence the need for properly trained personnel, imbued with patriotic values”, he declared.
The FADM are the loyal guardians of the gains of the Mozambican people, and successful compliance with their mission requires training at all levels, he continued, so that their performance meets the responsibilities given to them by the Constitution.
