The Nampula Provincial Office for the Fight against Corruption, in northern Mozambique on Friday ordered the detention of nine staff of the Nampula Central Hospital, and two private business people, who are accused of defrauding the hospital of almost 2.57 million meticais (about 43,000 US dollars).
The spokesperson for the anti-corruption office, Fredy Jamal, told a press conference that the money was fraudulently removed from the hospital’s coffers in 2016 and 2017.
He added that twelve people should have been detained, but one of the three business people involved has disappeared. Of the nine hospital employees arrested, six handled the state financial management system known as e-SISTAFE. The three business people believed to be involved had no contractual ties with the state.
Jamal said the detainees are accused of 16 counts of abuse of their position, 16 counts of paying undue remunerations, one count of membership of a criminal association, and seven counts of illegally receiving fees or wages. He added that the authorities have so far managed to recover 664,735 meticais.
The modus operandi of the group, he explained, was to use the financial system to transfer funds to the bank accounts of the hospital staff and of the business people.
He urged state bodies to comply with the procedures for public hiring and expenditure, and to denounce all acts of corruption in public and private institutions.
