Nyusi to deliver lecture on Mozambique peace process in Norway

Mozambique lived through a bloody civil war after liberation from Portugal in 1975. Around one million Mozambicans were killed and five million people became refugees and internally displaced. After the General Peace Accord in 1992, a new constitution that guarantees democracy and rights followed. Still, the conflict reoccurred a few times, most recently in 2013. Peace negotiations are now ongoing to ensure lasting peace between President Nyusi and the interim leader of Renamo, Ossufo Momade.

In June 2018, the government of Mozambique publicly launched its first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security for the period 2018-2022. With the adoption of this plan, Mozambique joined an ever-growing community of states recognising women’s important roles in preventing and resolving conflicts and in building peace. To support the implementation of the National Action Plan, and to ensure further collaboration in this field, Norway and Mozambique now plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding concerning cooperation on Women, Peace and Security.

In light of these recent developments, the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites you to the event “Roadmap to Peace in Mozambique”. What are the main priorities of the Mozambican government on Women, Peace and Security? What are the major challenges to the implementation of the National Action Plan? And how does the National Action Plan relate to the overall peace-building process in Mozambique? These are some of the questions that will be raised and discussed at this event.
