Mozambique: Catholic University rector asks CC judges to shed their "political cloaks"
The Mozambican Youth Parliament, a civil society organisation that brings young people together, has proposed increasing the price of alcoholic beverages in an effort to combat excessive consumption among young people.
Spokeswoman Jamira Horacio, quoted in the daily newspaper Noticias, said that the low price of some alcoholic beverages was stimulating dependency among young people, especially among the poorest, and creating a public health problem.
“Drinks that are easily accessible in terms of price are mostly consumed by young people with scarce financial means. A price hike would be an appropriate way to discourage over-consumption,” Horácia said during a talk on alcoholism.
Horácia ustged harsh measures against shopkeepers who violate the law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages to people under 18 years of age, advocating fines and sentencing to community work as effective responses.
She also called on Mozambican civil society associations to come together to combat excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.
