Village in northern interior of Mozambique battling buffalo raids

A village in northern Mozambique’s interior has been battling buffalo raids on its bean fields since the beginning of October, daily newspaper Noticias quotes a local official as saying.
Wild animals from a nature reserve are causing damage “that will jeopardise the income of families”, Eduardo Daniel, the director of the economic activity in Muembe, Niassa province, says.
The buffalo have destroyed an area of about seven hectares – equivalent to seven football fields – near the village of Matalane, primarily in two raids on October 3 and 29, he added.
About 9% of the area of Muembe district is part of the Niassa National Reserve, where there are numerous species of wild animals, including buffalo. These latter “move around a lot” between December and March, especially near water courses, he added.
Members of the Natural Resources and Environment Protection Force have been mobilised to scare the animals away and reduce the danger of contact with communities.
