“Cloths with art” by the talented Portuguese artist São Paixão
Maria de Assunção Perestrello Marques Paixão, commonly known as São Paixão was born in Lisbon, 1942, came to Mozambique when she was only six. Graduated in architecture from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, São Paixão started to embroider paintings in 1985. She has taken part in collective exhibitions since 2009, highlighting the palette and needle with Victor Sousa.
With 9 years of age, she learns to embroider with her maternal grandmother and, starting in 1985, she begins to make her "embroideries", adaptations of paintings by famous painters, first in a fine linen cloth and embroidery line, but soon she starts to use burlap and thick yarn of tapestry or wool.
She started this activity as a hobby when she had to accompany her husband, then an international employee. But it is only in 2009 that she participated in several group and individual exhibitions. She has works sold in Mozambique, Portugal, France, Switzerland and on display in several galleries in Maputo. She currently lives and works in Maputo. She is a member of Núcleo de Arte.
