The construction of the 235 km Cuamba to Marrupa power line in Niassa will use electric power cables produced at the Beluluane Industrial Park in Maputo province, a first for the domestic supply of such materials.
For EDM, which aims to offer 100 percent electricity access by 2030, this is an added bonus, as it will reduce the cost of rural electrification.
The Niassa power line project includes a new substation in Marruma that will be connected to the Cuamba station, from there distributing energy to the north of Niassa province and Balama and Namuno in Cabo Delgado and adding 25,000 new customers to the national grid.
The new power line will also serve as an alternative power supply in the district of Marrupa, which currently depends on a low-capacity line from Cuamba and suffers periodic blackouts because of the lack of a back-up supply system.
