The district courts of the five municipalities where Renamo lodged appeals against the results of the October 10 municipal elections have rejected them, a source from the main opposition party in Mozambique told Lusa.
“These decisions do not surprise us, judging by the positions that these bodies have taken in similar cases,” said André Magibire, the national representative of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).
Renamo lodged appeals against the election results in: Monapo, in Nampula province, Alto Molocué, in Zambézia province, Marromeu, in Sofala province, Moatize, in Tete province, and Matola, in Maputo province.
According to Magibire, grounds for the rejection of appeals range from alleged late submission of the appeal to the lack of attached official deliberations and result sheets [editais] to the appeal’s documents.
“The allegations of delays do not even make sense because the results were released on Friday and they did not work on Sunday, so we were forced to submit the documents on Monday. The documents that they say are missing, we did not submit them simply because they were not available then,” said Renamo’s national representative.
Magibire added that the main opposition party in Mozambique will not give up and has already submitted new appeals to the Constitutional Council (CC).
“We will continue to trust the organs of justice. Of course we wanted to see everything resolved, but unfortunately that was the decision,” concludes Magibire, cited by Lusa.
Meanwhile, AIM today points out that these results are not definitive, as “they are currently being checked by the CNE, which will announce its results next week.” Those CNE results must after the announcement “be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council, the highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law,” reads the AIM report.
