Expansion of gas distribution network in Inhambane

The network of piped natural gas in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane will reach at least 250 new residential consumers in the next few months, according to a press release from the National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH).

This is part of the project to expand the gas distribution network in the northern districts of Inhambane.

The fourth phase was launched recently in the town of Vilankulo by the mayor of Vilankulo, Abilio Machado, and the ENH delegate, Dauto Rogunate.

Budgeted at 340,000 US dollars, this phase of the project is intended to connect 170 consumers in Vilankulo, 50 in Inhassoro district and 30 in Govuro district. The network in northern Inhambane already covers 1,533 residential, commercial and industrial consumers.

122 of the new consumers in Vilankulo have already signed contracts with ENH. Work on installing the new gas pipes has begun and is expected to take three months.

The northern Inhambane network is fed from gas extracted by ENH from the Pande 7 well, which ENH began to exploit in 1992. The costs of piping the gas to residences in the three districts proved high, and so in 2012, ENH opted to subsidise the cost of connecting residential consumers.

It was this subsidy that made it possible to increase the number of beneficiaries from 220 in 2012 to 1,533 today.
