Preparations for Independence celebrations in Manicaland are well in course with governors from Manica and Sofala provinces in Mozambique making up the list of visitors who will join the country in celebrating 36 years of self rule.
This year’s event will be bigger and better, starting with an all-night musical gala at the Showgrounds in Mutare that will see various artistes from the province entertaining multitudes expected to throng the sports pavilion.
Minister for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene, is expected to lead proceedings at the main celebrations that will be held at Sakubva Stadium on Monday morning.
In an interview on Wednesday, Cde Chimene, said her Mozambican counterparts would be joining fellow comrades in celebrating Uhuru.
“This year we have two governors from Manica and Sofala in Mozambique who will make up our guests list. We share common memories of the liberation struggle with our neighbours in Mozambique and we will never forget the immense contribution they did in helping us attain the independence that will celebrate on Monday. They are our brothers and sisters-in-arms and we value their presence on this important occasion.
“This is also an opportunity for us to cement our existing relations and map the future that benefits our countries and improve standards of living for the people. As usual I urge the people of Manicaland to come out in their numbers. As we celebrate we must remember our recently fallen national heroines, Cdes Victoria Chitepo and Vivian Mwashita who hail from this province. They are part of the largest group of freedom fighters from this province who put their lives on the line to liberate the country from the bondage of colonialism,” she said.
Cde Chimene urged drivers to sober up on the roads to avoid carnages, saying instead of celebrating independence people will end up mourning dead relatives.
“People should be calm and merry make in peace. Road users must sober up and drive safely. In the same vein people must remember that whenever there are celebrations criminals will be on the prowl to pounce hence there is need to be careful and protect your property,” she said.
Outlining a detailed programme of the Uhuru celebrations, the provincial head in the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, Mr Kupukani Masungure, who is chairing a provincial taskforce preparing the celebrations, said everything was in line.
“The gala will end at midnight to ensure that people will be able to attend the Sakubva Stadium main event where Cde Chimene will deliver the Presidential speech.
“There is food for everyone which will be served at various venues. A variety of entertainment groups will showcase their talents.
“As usual the ZNA, Prisons and ZRP will entertain people at the stadium.
“A soccer tournament will be played later in the day starting with a curtain-raiser women soccer match.
“Tenax and Buffaloes football clubs will clash in the main match that will start at 3pm,” he said.
Mr Masunungure said the celebrations would cascade down to the province’s seven districts where District Administrators will lead proceedings.
