No more preliminary results in the internet: District electoral bodies will take it from here – Mozambique Elections

From today, the results of Mozambique’s municipal elections will be announced by the district electoral bodies and not through the internet, official sources have told Lusa.

The joint portal of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) and the National Election Commission (CNE) where the counts began to be released shows no evolution in the preliminary results since Thursday.

In this website, the information is that 21 of the 53 municipalities are complete with the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party, winning in 20, losing in one, Chiure, to the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo ), the main opposition party.

However, other parallel counts of electoral observation platforms indicate that there are more municipalities cleared and that Frelimo, despite maintaining the domain of the map, should lose municipalities for Renamo.

CNE spokesman Paulo Cuinica told Lusa today that it has been decided that the disclosure of the results would [from now on] follow the “regulated format and identical” to that of previous elections, thus “passing through intermediate electoral administration bodies”.

The latest update of preliminary results [on the www.stae.org.mz website] was made on Thursday morning and it is now “up to the district-level bodies to promote their dissemination,” added Cláudio Langa, a STAE spokesperson.

Only after that “will the data [results] be fully aggregated nationally,” something which “is expected to be able to happen in two weeks time”, another source linked to the process added.

The ‘Votar Moçambique’ observation platform predicted that “Renamo [which in 2013 only won in four of the 53 municipalities] is in a position to win ten or more municipalities, which would be a historic high” and would reduce Frelimo’s dominance, which in 2013 only lost in four of the 53 municipalities.

The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) on Thursday declared itself the victor in Beira, one of Mozambique’s most important cities, where its head of list Daviz Simango was re-elected for a fourth term.

Parallel counts also point to Renamo’s winning in Nampula, the main northern city, and in Quelimane, the provincial capital of Zambézia, where the main opposition party has already celebrated victory, according to the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM).

A close race between Frelimo and Renamo is under way in Matola, which is the second largest municipality in Mozambique.
