Elections Commission confirms Renamo win in Nacala – AIM report

The official result from Wednesday’s municipal elections in the northern port city of Nacala confirms that Mozambique’s main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, has won.
The result sheet, issued by the Nacala District Elections Commission (CDE) shows that Renamo beat the ruling Frelimo party by almost 15 per cent. The Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) came a poor third, with less than four per cent.
Inexplicably, no results from Nacala have yet been posted on the website of the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE), which began posting provisional results on Wednesday night, but has not been updated since around midday Thursday. The CDE result sheet confirms the forecast of a Renamo victory made by Radio Mozambique, based on 24 of the 195 polling stations.
The results announced by the Nacala CDE are as follows:
Total valid votes: 80,190
Renamo: 43,810 (54.63 per cent)
Frelimo: 32,469 (40.49 per cent)
MDM: 2,247 (3.8 per cent)
The remaining two per cent of the valid votes were divided among the minor parties. As in many other municipalities, the turnout in Nampula was fairly high at 59.8 per cent. Thus slightly more than 40 per cent of the registered electorate did not vote.
The results are not yet definitive – they have to be confirmed by the National Elections Commission (CNE), and validated by the Constitutional Council, the highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law.
