Provisional results from Mozambique’s local elections, which are to take place on Wednesday, 10 October, in 53 municipalities around the country, are set to be released by Thursday, according to the electoral authorities.
Felisberto Naife, director-general of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), was quoted on Tuesday by the daily newspaper Notícias as saying that the STAE is in a position to ascertain the provisional results promptly.
Felisberto Naife told Notícias that the STAE was well organised to quickly supply provisional ballot results, as a result of “efforts to accelerate the process of dissemination of results, in response to appeals that have been made in this regard”.
Among the efforts underway, Notícias reports, are “equipping voting stations with more than three tables with computers which, besides helping the voter identify where he or she is supposed to vote, will facilitate operations such as validation or annulment of votes, help in calculating mandates and checking votes, among other things”.
According to the same source, Maputo and Matola voters will today and tomorrow “receive messages [SMS] from a STAE computer application confirming their identity, where they will vote and the table number. Voters can also find out via the websites www.stae.org or www.cne.org.mz”.
On Wednesday, 3,910,712 voters will elect the presidents of 53 municipalities in Mozambique and their assembly members.
STAE has established 5,459 voting assemblies in the 53 municipalities, and the recruitment of the 38,213 polling station officials is underway. Five thousand national polling observers and 250 foreign observers are accredited, as well as 1,000 national and foreign journalists.
