A group of unidentified individuals set fire on Monday to the premises of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) in the municipality of Bilene, southern Gaza province, a party spokesman has told Lusa.
“The incident happened in the early hours and caught us all by surprise, because that particular headquarters was considered among safest in the region,” Sande said.
The fire destroyed all the third-largest Mozambican parliamentary party’s campaign material, Carmona added. “The facilities were partially destroyed, compromising our campaign plans for the municipality.”
The MDM spokesman also said that the head of the party’s list for Bilene had received threats during the previous days. “Our head of list has received threats from members of Frelimo [the ruling party in Mozambique],” Carmona said.
Carlos Macuacua, the police spokesman in Gaza province, told Lusa that investigations into the fire were already under way and promised to investigate the threats, although he said
the corporation had so far received no complaints about the matter.
“Issuing threats is a crime. They should have told the police so that there could be an investigation,” Macuacua said.
According to the Centre for Public Integrity’s Local Elections Bulletin, unknown people on October 1 also vandalised the local headquarters of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) in Bilene.
Elections are scheduled for October 10 in the 53 municipalities which cover part of Mozambican territory.
