Helena Mário, wife of the Frelimo mayor of Marromeu and candidate for re-election, is due to go on trial tomorrow for destroying Renamo campaign material. On 26 September the secretary of the local court, which deals with electoral crimes, refused to accept the complaint. When a Renamo lawyer became involved, it was accepted.
In Marromeu a young man was arrested for putting a Renamo poster on the front of a shop run by the wife of the mayor. Emilio Gaspar was beaten and arrested and jailed, but released on MT 10,000 ($165) bail. The case will also be heard tomorrow.
