The National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) seized date-expired products valued at 590,000 meticais [US$9,713 at current exchange rates] in six provinces during the fortnight September 6 to 21, and closed three commercial establishments for hygiene irregularities.
In all the INAE inspected 830 establishments in the period mentioned.
According to Ali Mussa, director of operations at the INAE, persistent hygiene problems in shops and bakeries are behind the suspension of activities.
Regarding the import ban on sausages and polony following the listeriosis outbreak in South Africa, Mussa said a team was still monitoring the possibility of resuming supplies.
