Mozambican Catholic bishops consider Nyusi’s cycle of governance beset by crises

The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique (CEM) says that President Filipe Nyusi’s term in office will be remembered as one of the “least glorious” in the history of the country, citing the difficult political and economic situation.

“There is no doubt that, unfortunately, the present cycle of governance will be remembered as one of the least glorious of our democracy,” reads the bishops pastoral letter.

The CEM, which brings together the bishops of the Catholic Church in Mozambique, notes that the country was plagued by military violence between 2015 and 2017 as a result of differences between the government and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).

The conflict between the government and Renamo and the lengthy negotiations that followed led to the paralysis of state institutions.

Also in the security field, the government has been unable to contain the armed attacks perpetrated by unknown groups in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. “There seems to be no clear and decisive position on this situation,” the Mozambican Catholic bishops say.

On the economic front, the country was shaken by the disclosure in 2016 of debts endorsed by the previous Mozambican government, which are still exerting a pernicious effect on the life of the country.

“The lack of clarity that permeates these two sectors, that of politics and of the economy, tends to progressively and rampantly exert a negative influence on the development of the country,” the CEM letter reads.

The bishops point out that, after so much disillusion and disappointment, “many Mozambicans have acquired an aversion to everything political, considering it a dishonest activity”.

“Politics cannot be considered an art of deceit, it is par excellence the art of governing and managing society in order to achieve its essential values,” the pastoral letter concludes.
