Maputo Municipality is investing 1.5 million Euros in the rental of heavy machinery to manage and compact waste in the Hulene dump, where a landslide killed 16 people in February.
A new dump was announced by the government for 2019, but until then, Maputo will use plant and compactors rented from two private companies to run Hulene, the newspaper Notícias announces today.
One night of heavy rain triggered the February landslide, when rubbish piled three stories high buried the residents of shacks on the edge of the dump.
With a new rainy season starting in October, the machinery will “open streets, reduce the height of the garbage heap and undertake the daily management of accumulated waste,” the report explains.
The contracts signed with the equipment rental companies are valid for one year, renewable for an equal period, municipal director of Urban Solid Waste Management and Public Health João Mucavele said.
